Windows Apps on Macs
With Windows 10 support ending soon I decided to make the switch to Linux, so I no longer have any Windows machines in my house. There is a Windows app I use from time to time though called Mp3tag to pull down cover art and mass rename mp3s mostly. I was was on my MBP and wanted to see if they have a release for Mac and they do… but it cost $25 or something.
So I thought: I’ve been doing a ton with Wine recently on my desktop, MacOS is basically linux (BSD), so I wondered if there was a way to use Wine that doesn’t suck. There is! Kegworks is a little UI that lets you download different versions of Wine for Mac and creates a native Mac app to wrap them. Pretty cool.
It was a bit buggy, the UI locked up a few times and I had to retry some operations, but essentially I: made a new wrapper app, ran the installer for Mp3tag, then moved the new .app file into my application folder and done. Not bad at all. Now I have Mp3tag.app that fires up Wine and runs Mp3tag.exe. It is a little slow to start, but hey it’s a free and legal version of the app without having to fire up a VM.
Just a quick little tech tip!
